Remember the Stardust mission that returned samples of comet dust back to Earth in 2006? The spacecraft dropped off a capsule containing samples of a comet's coma and interstellar dust particles, but the spacecraft "bus" is still out there in an elongated orbit of the sun. It will come home again, swinging by Earth on January 14, at 19:40 UTC (12:40 pm PST), getting a gravity assist from the home planet as it flies approximately 5713 miles (9200 kilometers) from the Earth’s surface. But the spacecraft isn't just wandering the solar system with nothing to do. It has a new job and a new mission. Called Stardust NExT, (New Exploration of Tempel 1) the spacecraft will re-survey comet Tempel 1 – the comet that the Deep Impact mission left a mark on — encountering the comet on Feb. 14, 2011.(February 14 is Hyper Dimensional Cube date at macrolevel orientation )

Yellowstone Volcano, USAThe continuing earthquake swarm under Yellowstone volcano has migrated NNE. In the past 24 hours there have been 7 earthquakes larger than magnitude 2.5, centered at a location 14 km NNE of Yellowstone lake. The largest earthquake had a magnitude of 3.3. There have been about 900 earthquakes at the volcano since December 26th. This is the largest earthquake swarm in 20 years at Yellowstone. There are no other signs of unrest at the volcano.

WEDNESDAY 21 JANUARY Air Crash Investigation: Ghost PlaneOn 14 August, 2005 shortly after take off from Cyprus, the flight crew of Helios Airways Flight 522 reports that an alarm is sounding in the cockpit. Suddenly the plane goes silent. Repeated calls from air traffic control go unanswered as the plane gets closer and closer to the city of Athens. Two fighter jets from the Greek military intercept the aircraft, concerned that Flight 522 could be a victim of a hijacking or terrorist plot. As the plane maintains a holding pattern in Athens airspace, a fighter pilot sees someone moving in the cockpit – but gets no response to repeated radio calls. Then, after almost three hours in the air, Helios Flight 522 runs out of fuel and crashes in the mountains. All 121 people on board are killed. What happened to the captain and co-pilot? Who was flying the plane? Tissue samples from the crash site and a weak mayday call on the cockpit voice recorder reveal that one of the flight attendants was in the cockpit when the plane went down. A key panel is also recovered, which points investigators to a small pressurization switch, which was not in the proper setting. As the plane climbed, oxygen seeped out of the aircraft, until everyone on board passed out. A report issued fifteen months after the crash sheds light on the worst crash in Greek aviation

oh yes , the launch of space shuttle discovery is sceduled for March 11 or 12. As Goro already pointed out this launch timeframe is a major Phi point linked to the desintegration of space shuttle Columbia on February 1, 2003. I think Goro is referring to this timeframe around March 11-12, which is HD Tetrahedron timeframe at macrolevel orientation, as being a Phi point between the desintegration of Columbia and the end of the Mayan Calendar, because that's what it is.
This means that we can expect Discovery back from its 16 days mission on March 27 or 28. During this timeframe of the return of Discovery around March 27-28, Venus will be at the same orbittal position as during the fatal return of Columbia. Exactly 10 Venus years in Earth days.

For last year on July 12 or 15 (+/- 1 day ), 2007 I had determined a direct echo for Hirhoshima - Nagasaki, already posted in this HDDesign material years ago, years prior to the timeframe.

This echo was based on the theoretical long term cycle based on the 911/Tetrahedron Design, causing a 'difference' between our 'actual' percecption of time and based on the elements as described in the 'breaking the code' thread.

This is not a running pattern with several recurring keydates, its a direct link between for instance Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 and July 15, 2007 (+/- 1day), based on the precession cycle as described in this HDDesign.

When that day came, a strong Earthquake struck Japan, coinciding with a powerful typhon, causing the worlds biggest nuclear plant to leak.

The lynchings were officially re-opened for investigation by former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes nearly eight years ago and were on a list of revived cold cases cited by former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales early last year.

Brooks said he and other advocates have noticed renewed activity by investigators in the area since then.

"We can feel their presence when we're there," he said. "Every time we do something, people show up that we've never seen before, and we know they're not regular folks who live in Walton County. We don't get in their way, and we don't ask many questions."

Historians say there has never again been a documented case of as many people being lynched -- killed by mob without due process -- in one attack in the United States since Moore's Ford.

Court documents say 27-year-old Araceli Camacho Gomez, of Pasco, Washington, had her hands and feet bound with yarn and suffered "massive trauma to her stomach area" late Friday night. An autopsy showed she died of the chest wounds, but had other wounds "consistent with the cutting of the body to remove an unborn child."

Her body was found early Saturday in Kennewick's Columbia Park.

A 23-year-old Kennewick woman, Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong, has been arrested for investigation of first-degree murder and is accused of trying to pass the infant boy off as her own in calls made late Friday night to emergency dispatchers. She was being held without bail Monday, with another court appearance scheduled Wednesday.

Court documents say blue mechanic's gloves soaked in blood, a box cutter, bloody paper towels, yarn, a mucus bulb, baby bottle and baby socks were among some of the items found in Sisouvanh Synhavong's purse.

They didn't say whether the boxcutter was used to cut or stab Gomez and police refused to discuss details Monday.

Court documents allege that Sisouvanh Synhavong called 911 at 11:04 p.m. Friday saying she was by JCPenney, had just given birth and that she thought the baby had died.

Dispatchers were able to trace the calls, and she was found in a parking lot with the baby, holding what appeared to be an umbilical cord. A "significant amount of blood and pieces of human tissue" were found in the back seat, documents said.

The site was a mile or two from the spot where Gomez's body was later found, but it wasn't immediately clear whether Gomez was killed at the site where her body was found, or was killed elsewhere and the body dumped there.

There were growing fears in Israel last night that Hamas missiles could threaten its top-secret nuclear facility at Dimona.

Rocket attacks from Gaza have forced Israelis to flee in ever greater numbers and military chiefs have been shaken by the size and sophistication of the militant group’s arsenal.

In Beersheba, until a few days ago a sleepy desert town in southern Israel, there is little sign of the 186,000 inhabitants. Schools are closed and the streets of shuttered shops echo with the howl of sirens warning of incoming rockets.

Israeli planes, meanwhile, began a new stage yesterday in their offensive on Gaza, killing Nizar Rayyan, a senior Hamas official. The one-tonne bomb in Jabaliya is also understood to have killed two of his four wives and four of his twelve children. More than 400 Palestinians have been killed in the six days of Israeli attacks.

Despite a diplomatic mission by Tzipi Livni, the Israeli Foreign Minister, to Paris, the Israeli army continued to muster thousands of troops and scores of tanks along Gaza’s border for a possible ground offensive. Israel’s airstrikes are designed to blunt Hamas’s capacity to fire its new Grad missiles deep into its territory. The weapons are smuggled in through tunnels and by sea, replacing homemade Qassam rockets.

Israeli officials say that Hamas has also acquired dozens of Iranian-made Fajr-3 missiles with an even longer range. Many fear that as the group acquires ever more sophisticated weaponry it is only a matter of time before the nuclear installation at Dimona, 20 miles east of Beersheba, falls within its sights. Dimona houses Israel’s only nuclear reactor and is believed to be where nuclear warheads are stored.

“Maybe Hamas will get a big present from Iran or Hezbollah, a few good long-range missiles and they’ll use it,” said Limor Brina, 40, a jeweller who is learning the lessons of life under rocket threat: she sleeps with her clothes on and heads to a shelter whenever the siren sounds.

Israel’s worst nightmare is that soon all its cities will be within range either of the Hezbollah Katyushas arrayed on the Lebanese border to the north or the increasingly sophisticated missiles stockpiled by Hamas to the south. Both groups have links to Israel’s archenemy Iran.

Israel has said that its aim is to smash Hamas’s rocket-firing capability but also to topple the hardline Islamist regime that seized power in the Gaza Strip in 2007 after bloody street battles with its secular rivals Fatah. Until that goal is achieved, many in Beersheba are packing their bags and heading for Tel Aviv or Eilat.

“Maybe 30 or 40 per cent of people have left the city,” said Ron Shukron, 26, running one of the few grocery shops still open. As he spoke a siren echoed through the empty streets. With only 15 seconds to take cover, he stepped under a reinforced support beam in the ceiling. Seconds later came the dull thud of a rocket exploding on the edge of town.

Israel set to begin ground war against Hamas in Gaza

Israel is poised to launch a major ground offensive into Gaza tonight after allowing hundreds of foreigners living in the devastated territory to evacuate.

After a week of air strikes that have killed at least 420 Palestinians and left scores of buildings in rubble, the Israeli army was set to fling hundreds of troops and tanks into a blitz to stamp out Hamas’s military wing, The Times understands.

Despite the looming onslaught, more Hamas rockets – which have so far killed four Israelis – were fired into southern Israel today.

The Islamist group vowed that its attacks, which have lasted for years and which finally provoked the massive Israeli campaign, would not stop.

“I call on the resistance to continue pounding Jewish settlements and cities,” said Sheikh Abdelrahman al-Jamal at the funeral of a hardline Hamas political leader killed, together with his four wives and 11 children, in an Israeli air strike on his home.

“We will remain on the path of jihad until the end of days.”

The funeral was held outdoors because an earlier air raid had smashed the mosque where the service was due to take place. Israel said the building had been used to stockpile weapons.

Among the mounting Palestinian death toll today were three young brothers, aged between seven and 10, who were killed in one of the 30 or so strikes carried out by Israeli warplanes across the strip.

All along the border, Israeli tanks and troops have turned fields into makeshift camps from which to launch their offensive into Gaza. The Government has already mobilised more than 6,000 reserve troops and has given the green light to call up almost 3,000 more.

Artillery barrages were also being fired into the strip while aircraft dropped bombs on open ground that the army will need to cross, and where Hamas has placed mines and dug tunnels to allow its guerrillas to outflank the invaders.

Support for Operation Cast Lead is sky high in Israel, with polls showing that almost 85 per cent of the public backing the campaign.

There is also majority support for expanding it into a ground campaign, despite the dangers of high casualties in an urban battlefield against highly trained and motivated guerrillas waging war on their own turf. Almost 42 per cent of Israelis wanted the army to move in, while 39 percent favoured a continued air campaign.

Hamas has an estimated 15,000 fighters who have used the 18 months that they have controlled the strip to hone their skills and transform a militia into a small army. Hamas’s military wing has been waiting for a ground offensive to face the Israeli army in open combat, despite Israel’s vast military superiority.

The onslaught has provoked large anti-Israeli demonstrations around the world, with protest rallies held today in India, Indonesia, Turkey and Australia.

But Hamas’s call for a “day of wrath” in the Palestinian territories produced only a lukewarm response in the face of clampdowns by Israeli security forces.

Several thousand protesters marched through the West Bank city of Ramallah, while in East Jerusalem youths threw stones at Israeli security forces and some 50 women demonstrated outside the Friday prayers at al-Aqsa mosque.

The demonstrators directed their anger principally at their own Palestinian leaders, and heads of Arab countries whom they felt had not done enough to stop Israel’s seven-day incursion into Gaza.

“Abbas is with the Jews, not with the Arabs. If he really was supporting and working in favour of our Arab brother’s in Gaza, this wouldn’t have happened,” said Um-Mahr, a 66-year-old resident of East Jerusalem.

Akram Jwaeibis, 58, said Arab leaders today were afraid to do more than voice criticism of the Israeli government’s actions. “Most of them just talk. That is why we are waiting for Nasrallah. Or Haniyeh to do something more than talk.”

Diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis were growing after Israel’s surprise offensive in the days after Christmas caught the world off guard. “We are working toward a ceasefire that would not allow a re-establishment of the status quo ante where Hamas can continue to launch rockets out of Gaza,” said Condoleezza Rice, the outgoing US Secretary of State.

“It is obvious that that ceasefire should take place as soon as possible, but we need a ceasefire that is durable and sustainable,” she said.

A high-level European delegation is due in the region at the weekend, as were Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, and Tony Blair, the international community’s envoy to the Middle East.

Palestinians report clashes early Monday near the eastern border

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Thousands of Israeli troops backed by tanks and helicopter gunships surrounded Gaza's largest city and fought militants at close range Sunday, the first full day of an overwhelming ground offensive in the coastal territory.

Israel said it has inflicted a heavy blow against Hamas as it expands a weeklong offensive meant to stop rocket fire on southern Israel. But spiraling civilian casualties among Palestinians fueled an international outcry, even as the U.S. blocked approval of a U.N. Security Council statement Saturday night calling for an immediate cease-fire.

Israel's ground forces moved in after nightfall Saturday following hours of intense, fiery artillery shelling to clear the way, and Hamas warned that its fighters would turn Gaza into an Israeli "graveyard."

Palestinians reported clashes early Monday in eastern Gaza near the border with Israel. Hamas militants fired rocket-propelled grenades and mortars at advancing Israeli tanks. Explosions could be heard in Gaza City as aircraft attacked buildings. There was no immediate word about casualties.

On Sunday, Israeli soldiers fought primarily in open areas in the launching zones used by Gaza's militants to send rockets raining down on Israeli cities. As the troops in three brigade-size formations moved in, residents of those Israeli cities began cautiously emerging from bomb shelters in hopes that the rocket fire would taper off.

Gaza City cut off
Backing up the troops, mobile artillery units fired shells that exploded in veils of white smoke over Gaza's urban skyline. Tanks pushed south of Gaza City as deep as the abandoned settlement of Netzarim, which Israel left along with other communities when it pulled out of Gaza in 2005.

That effectively cut off Gaza City, the territory's largest population center with some 400,000 residents, from the rest of Gaza to the south.

Israel's military chief said Hamas fighters were trying to draw soldiers deeper into Gaza's sprawling, densely packed urban areas, where the military said militants were shielding themselves behind civilians.

"You entered like rats," Hamas spokesman Ismail Radwan told Israeli soldiers in a statement on Hamas' Al Aqsa TV. "Gaza will be a graveyard for you, God willing," he said.

Israeli forces have not yet entered urban areas, said Brig. Gen. Avi Benayahu, the chief army spokesman. He warned, however, that the operation was not a "school trip" and would be long and demanding.

The ground invasion risks turning into intense urban combat, with house-to-house fighting, sniper fire and booby-traps. Hamas is believed to have some 20,000 gunmen and has had time to prepare.

To guard against hidden explosives, Israel's ground forces moved through fields and orchards with bomb-sniffing dogs.

More than 500 killed
Since the ground assault began, 64 Palestinian civilians have been killed, said Dr. Moaiya Hassanain, a Health Ministry official. The new deaths brought the death toll in the Gaza Strip to more than 512 since Dec. 27. The tally is based on figures from the U.N. and Palestinian health officials as well as a count by The Associated Press.

Five Israelis have been killed since the offensive began. One soldier has been killed in the ground operation and about 40 were wounded, some of them in heavy exchanges of fire near the militant stronghold of Jebaliya, a town on Gaza City's northern outskirts, the army said. Heavy Israeli casualties could undermine what has so far been overwhelming public support for the operation.

At one hospital in the northern village of Beit Lahiya, medics carrying three injured children in their arms rushed them to treatment. One of the children had a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around his head and covering his eyes.

An Israeli shell also struck an ambulance in the town, killing a paramedic, said Marwan Abu Ras, a hospital administrator. The relief organization Oxfam, which said the ambulance belonged to a partner organization, al-Awda Hospital, confirmed the shelling.

An airstrike hit another ambulance belonging to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza City, killing three other paramedics, said medic Jamal Hawajiri. That ambulance crew was driving to a Hamas training site where there were reports of wounded.

An Israeli army spokesman said he had no information on the incidents.

Rockets continue despite Israeli strikes

Israel pounds Hamas, but rocket fire continues

GAZA CITY (CNN) -- Hamas rocket fire into southern Israel persisted Monday despite a now 10-day campaign of Israeli airstrikes and two nights of ground combat in northern Gaza.

Thirty targets were hit overnight in Gaza, according to the Israeli military, including what it said was a mosque that was used to store a large amount of weapons. A number of militants are known to have been killed when a rocket launcher was destroyed, a military spokesman said, but no number was given. Israel also hit a suspected anti-aircraft emplacement.

Israel Defense Forces also said it targeted tunnels that Hamas has used for moving munitions under the border and into Gaza from Egypt. The Israeli navy also shelled targets in Gaza. But observers along Gaza's frontier with Israel saw at least one rocket strike inside Israeli territory Monday morning.

"After all this overnight pounding that we've heard ... continuing gun battles ... the warning sirens sounded in the town nearby here," CNN's Nic Robertson reported Monday. "That was an indication that a rocket was being fired out by Hamas into Israel and the rocket landed on the hillside a little bit away from where we are ..."

At least 30 rockets were launched from Gaza into southern Israel on Sunday -- including 12 Grad rockets -- the IDF said.

One Israeli was slightly wounded when a rocket landed in the southern Israeli city of Ashdod on Sunday, according to Israeli ambulance services. The Israeli military said the current ground assault is the second phase of the operation to stop militants from firing rockets and mortars into southern Israel.

The cat-and-mouse game continues as thousands of Israeli troops, backed by tanks, artillery and helicopters, have pushed deep into Gaza, essentially splitting the territory in two -- the north and the south.

"Every couple of minutes we hear an explosion," Safa Joudeh, a Gaza City resident, told CNN early Monday. "We can see tank coming closer and closer into Gaza."

She said most residents are confined to their homes, without electricity and are running out of food and water. "Many people didn't even realize there was a ground invasion until the next morning," Joudeh said.

Six Israeli soldiers were injured in overnight fighting, with light to moderate wounds, the IDF said Monday morning.

On Sunday, an Israeli soldier was killed and another was seriously wounded near Jabalya in northern Gaza, according to the Israeli military. It marks the first military death since the ground operation was launched Saturday night.

Israeli forces killed three senior members of Hamas' military wing on Sunday -- including one near Jabalya -- Hamas sources told CNN. The other two were killed in an airstrike in southern Gaza, the sources said.

Palestinian medical sources say Israeli forces have killed 37 Palestinians -- both civilians and militants -- since moving into the territory Saturday night. With those deaths, the sources said 507 Palestinians have been killed over the past week, including at least 100 women and children. In addition, 2,600 Palestinians have been injured, most of them civilians, the sources said.

Most of the casualties are a result of the weeklong airstrikes that preceded Saturday night's incursion.

Gaza's main hospital, already overloaded with Palestinians wounded in the weeklong Israeli air assault, reached critical mass on Sunday, according to a Norwegian doctor volunteering at Shifa Hospital.

"We've had a steady stream [of patients] every day, but the last 24 hours has [been] about triple the number of cases," Dr. Erik Fosse told CNN. "So this day has been extremely busy."

The Israeli military on Sunday continued its air assault on the Palestinian territory.

Housam Hamdan and Mohammed Hilou -- both senior members of the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades -- were killed in an airstrike in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, Hamas sources said.

The Israeli military said it was targeting the two senior Hamas members but gave no indication of their status.

Israel Defense Forces said Hamdan was responsible for firing longer-range Grad rockets into Beer Sheva and Ofakim in southern Israel. IDF said Hilou was a commander of Hamas special forces in Khan Yunis and was also responsible for launching long-range rocket attacks at Israel.

Hamas sources said Israeli forces in Jabalya killed Mohammed Shalpokh, a member of Hamas commando forces which Israel blames for launching rockets from northern Gaza.

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- India has provided evidence to Pakistani officials that it says links the November attacks on Mumbai to "elements in Pakistan," its foreign ministry announced Monday.

Pakistani officials in New Delhi and Islamabad received the file Monday morning, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

"We are also briefing all our friendly countries," said Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

According to the ministry, the documents include records from the interrogation of the sole surviving suspect in the attacks, a Pakistani citizen; data retrieved from mobile phones and satellite navigation systems; and weapons and equipment recovered from the attackers.

"It is our expectation that the government of Pakistan will promptly undertake further investigations in Pakistan and share the results with us so as to bring the perpetrators to justice," the ministry said in a statement announcing the handover.

In Islamabad, Pakistan's Foreign Office said it had received the Indian dossier and that the information "is being examined by concerned authorities."

India has said Islamic militants trained in Pakistan were behind the November 26 attacks on Mumbai, which left more than 160 people dead in a three-day siege of India's financial capital.

Pakistani officials have promised to cooperate with the investigation but have insisted that India share evidence supporting its case.

The killings fueled renewed tensions between South Asia's longtime rivals, who have fought three wars since independence and conducted tit-for-tat nuclear weapons tests in 1998.

A similar attack on India's parliament in 2001 brought the two countries to the brink of war.

The controversial idea that space impacts may have wiped out woolly mammoths and early human settlers in North America has received new impetus.

Nano-diamonds and other exotic impact materials have been unearthed in thin sediments, Science magazine reports.

The age of these materials coincides with the start of a millennium-long climate cooling event known as the Younger Dryas - some 13,000 years ago.

Many large animals vanish from the archaeological record at this time.

It is also the period in Earth history that sees the demise of Clovis culture - the prehistoric civilisation that many regard as the first human occupation of North America.

Taken together, it all makes for a compelling story, claims the team behind the latest research.

Question of origin

The group used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to identify tiny impact diamonds found at a range of sites - four of them Clovis archaeological digs - across North America. Diamonds form through intense pressure and heat.

"We've discovered nano-diamonds that are not normally produced through average processes on the surface of the Earth," said James Kennett, a geologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and author on the Science paper.

"They indicate there was an extra-terrestrial event on Earth 12,900 years ago," he told BBC News.

Scientists last year reported the discovery of five types of nano-diamonds along with impact material such as iridium and magnetic microspherules in the Younger Dryas impact layer, a thin blanket of sediment 12,900 years old.

The new analysis with TEM, they said, confirmed an abundance of diamonds in carbon spherules - melt material that forms in a fraction of a second - and the identification of lonsdalite, or hexagonal diamonds, associated with meteorite explosions.

The sheer number of diamonds - up to a million times that found in neighbouring sediment - and their presence inside spherules, refutes the speculation that the material is the normal rain of meteorite debris, says Allen West, a retired geophysicist in Arizona and a co-author.

"There is no other way that hexagonal diamonds could have ended up in a carbon spherule in this number," said Dr West.

Diamond 'rain'

The absence of some traditional impact material and visible craters in North America led researchers to speculate that a meteoroid or comet disintegrated before exploding in a cluster of airbursts.

Researchers argue that the airbursts could have triggered a series of dramatic climate shifts - including colder temperatures and an abrupt change in vegetation - that would have made survival difficult for large mammals and Clovis hunters.

The cause of the disappearance of Clovis culture and megafauna has long been debated.
Sceptics of the impact theory are not won over by the latest data. While scientists agree that something dramatic occurred on Earth 12,900 years ago, the theory that it was an exploding space rock has been cast by some as long on dramatic flair, short on compelling evidence.

Nicholas Pinter, a geologist at Southern Illinois University, said he had yet to see classic evidence of an asteroid impact.

The so-called discrete layers of material were not of a uniform age, he said. Microspherules, for example, rain down all the time and are present throughout the geological record.

"My graduate student found some on his mailbox," said Dr Pinter.

While Dr Kennett proposed that ordinary carbon was forged into diamonds in the intense pressure of an airburst, Dr Pinter said nano-diamonds are now being identified at other locations and times without credible evidence of any impact.

The suggestion that they could have been produced by an airburst event is "untested and highly implausible," he argued.

"Time will tell, but so far the Younger Dryas impact looks like an increasingly desperate fishing expedition for supporting evidence," said Dr Pinter.

Fire trace

Impact theorists maintain that the diamonds peak in abundance in the impact stratum.

The thumb width layer appears in a number of sites across North America including Murray Springs in Arizona and the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California.

It lies beneath a black mat of biomass formed during the Younger Dryas.

The bottom-most film contains charcoal and soot, thought to be associated with impact fires, said University of Oregon geo-archaeologist Doug Kennett, son of James Kennett and another author on the Science paper, who has studied sedimentary vegetation and charcoal records.

No mega-fauna skeleton or Clovis artefact has been found above the impact layer or the black mat, he said.

"The black mat covers them like a blanket," said Dr Kennett.

Before they disappeared, woolly mammoths and other massive beasts such as sabre-toothed cats, giant sloth, camels, and teratorns (predatory birds with a nearly four-metre wingspan) roamed North America.

Doug Kennett doubts the theories of over-hunting, climate change and disease used to account for their extinction. There are not enough Clovis kill sites to suggest that the animals were over-hunted, for example, he said.

The animals' disappearance coincides with that of Clovis artefacts in the archaeological record 12,900 years ago. Prehistoric Clovis Indians lived broadly across North America for a few hundred years.

They were big game hunters, who introduced a sophisticated new Stone Age technology - the fluted spear point, known today as the Clovis Point.

The Paleo-Indians vanish at the onset of the post-Ice Age Younger Dryas, or Big Freeze, that snapped Earth back to near glacial conditions, where it lingered for about 1,200 years.

Crater conundrum

The causes of the woolly mammoth extinction, the collapse of Clovis culture and the onset of the cold snap have long been debated. But only the impact theory accounts for the simultaneous occurrence of all three, said Doug Kennett.

Others are wary of the link. Jeff Severinghaus, a geochemist who studies ice cores at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is sceptical that an impact could have led to the temperature plunge.

He said records from Greenland suggested the cooling began earlier than 12,900 years ago. However, he is keeping an open mind.

"I'm still in a wait-and-see mode," added Dr Severinghaus.

Cosmic impacts are known to have profound climate consequences.

In this case, scientists propose that flash heat and pressure from an explosion destabilised the edges of the Laurentide ice sheet that covered North America, adding fresh water to the North Atlantic, and slowing the conveyor of warm water that heats Western Europe.

Impact debris kicked into the atmosphere would have cooled the Earth and led to a number of ecological disruptions, including abrupt shifts in vegetation.

Critics say that with an impact comes a crater, such as at Chicxulub in the Yucatan, Mexico, which supports the theory that dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid impact 65 million years ago.

But an airburst in which an impactor explodes in the Earth's atmosphere - such as that over Tunguska, Siberia, in 1908 - might not produce a crater, said Dr James Kennett.

The energy released in the Tunguska blast was at least five megatons, said Dr West. The Younger Dryas impact would have been much larger.

"Imagine 1,000 to 10,000 atomic bombs detonating within a few minutes over two continents," he said.

'Violates' understanding

Had the Clovis people witnessed the event, said Dr West, they would have seen a brilliant flash followed by others in quick succession.

The sky would be a canopy of fire, and shock waves would flatten trees. Miniscule diamonds would drizzle over tens of thousands of kilometres, a third of the way around the planet.

Nasa (Ames) space scientist David Morrison says the abundance of nano-diamonds is an "interesting mystery", but he does not think they were produced by cosmic airbursts.

A comet or asteroid that fragmented in Earth's atmosphere might have time to disperse over a few hundred kilometres, but certainly not thousands of kilometres across a continent, he said.

"I know of no mechanism that would break up a comet and distribute it over North America in the way they suggest," Dr Morrison told BBC News.

"It violates what we understand about cosmic impacts," he said.

Scepticism is necessary when building a new scientific theory. But, Dr West said, there was particular resistance to that of a Younger Dryas impact because the event occurred in modern human history and was so abrupt.

"People still like to think of geological processes happening slowly over time," he explained.

"It's unsettling that something happening in a few minutes could flip our climate and cause widespread extinctions."
